Hi, class.
I have said that the theme of the novel is "revenge." I am going to amend that and say that the theme is "getting even." He spends much time getting even with the people in his life prior to prison time.
In tonight's reading you will find some new characters. There is the priest who visits Caderrouse, and there is a young Englishman who is the head clerk of the firm of Thomson and French. What is the task of these two characters? Read their characterizations carefully. What do you notice about them?
Finally, do you have any questions for me?

They're tasks are to find out information from Edmund's past life. i notice that they both are alikein many ways and I suspect that they are both Edmund in disguise.

The priest and the clerk want to find out exactly how Edmund ended up in jail. I believe that Edmund is pretending to be these characters.

I think that the priest and the clerk are both Dantes in disguise. They are both oddly interested on how Dantes got to jail and the outcome of his friends/family. Also, there is no previous indication that a diamond was sold to the priest, so it is PROBABLY someone under cover. It was not that hard to get your hands on something similar to what a priest or clerk would wear, so disguising would not be "impossible"... Also, how would the priest know so much about Dantes if he didn't even know him?
ReplyDeleteoh, my above comment doesn't have my name/initial, so it's courtney f.
ReplyDeleteThe priest and the clerk are both very interested in Edmond's past. They both get their information by using money or valuables such as a diamond, which we know Edmond has recently found. Therefore, I think Edmond uses the priest and clerk as disguises to gain knowledge about why he ended up in prison and what has happened since.

The task of these two characters is to find out what has been going on since Dantes has been in jail. I think he disguises himself as them and talks to all his old "friends." One reason I think this is because on page 111 it says the man who walked up to Caderousse's inn was in his thirties. After Dantes got out of jail, this was about how old he was. The second reason I think these two men were him is because the priest knew so much about Caderousse. He knew where he lived, what he looked like, that he used to be a tailor, and so on. The third reason I think these men are Dantes in disguise is because when Dantes saw himself in the mirror for the first time after getting out of jail,he thought to himself that no one would recognize him. This could have been foreshadowing the events to come about his to disguises as the priest and clerk.
ReplyDeleteI am almost positive that both characters are Edmond Dantes. The characters are both similar to the way Dantes is described. In only a few chapters prior, it states that his appearance was altered so immensely by his experience in jail that no one from his past life would recognize him. Also, a priest wouldn't be walking around with a diamond so valuable. Dantes had just discovered a treasure with diamonds and rubies. He is using characters from his past. The priest was a take off of Faria and the English man was a take off of de Villeford. Dumas would not include these stories speaking of the other characters through Caderousse and Morel, he would just go to each of their houses with various characters. Dumas uses foreshadowing often and only gives hints to what is happening, which fits what is happening currently in the novel. I believe strongly that this is really Edmond Dantes. ~Madison C.

The priest and the Englishman's task is to find out what has happened in the fourteen years that Dantes was in jail. I think the priest was more focused on finding out the information on why Fernand and Danglars would want to put Dantes in jail. Another task that the priest might of had was to make sure that Edmund's friends that got the money from the diamond were the ones that deserved and needed it. Caderousse needed the money way more than Fernand or Danglars, who had become rich while Dantes was in prison. The Englishman, in my opinion, wanted to be positive that the Inspector of Prisons thought that Edmund Dantes was dead. This is because on page 114, the Englishman asks, "So the fugitive was drowned, was he?" Then the Inspector of Prisons responds, "He certainly was." Another task that the Englishman wanted to accomplish was to attempt to safe Morrel's business from bankruptcy. In a way, he accomplished this by giving Morrel three extra months to make his payments. I am almost positive that both of these men are Edmund Dantes in disguise. In the book on page 117 it says that 'the worthy shipowner had changed greatly in fourteen years'. The last time that Edmund would have seen Morrel was fourteen years ago, before he went to jail. Another clue in the book was on page 119 when it says that the Englishman started walking toward the crew of the Pharaon, but then stopped himself and moved to the corner of the room. To me this means that Edmund wanted to talk to the crew, and tell them that he was alive. But he would not be able to do this because he was in disguise and it would blow his cover.

These two characters are Dantes in disguise (sorry I don't remember how to do the accent mark). Their purpose is to find the good and honest men and reward them for their deeds and to catch up on the times. These characters are also to find the guilty, those who had done wrong by Dantes.

The priest and the young englishmen have very important deeds. Their job is to go around the city and find a honest man to where they can question and find out everything that they (Dantes) had missed. Also, I'm almost definite that these two characters are Dantes. They have such similar and intriguing qualities. Also, both are really set on finding out who has done wrong and who should be punished... with revenge!

edmond disguises himself as the priest and clerk in order to figure out what has happened the last 14 years while he was in prison. he can really get people to do whatever he wants them to do because he is so rich.

Edmund Dantes disquises himself as both the priest and the young Englishman. He does because he needs to know what hapened while he was in prizon. Also he does this so he learns which people to repay with vengence and which to repay with kindness.

I think that the author prods the reader to realize that both characters are Edmond Dantes in disguise. Not only due to many hints per scene, but also when, though he is the main character, the author takes you to the scenes with the priest and englishman without giving you so much as a hint as to what Dantes might be doing.
ReplyDeleteThere is also a very good reason for these people to be Edmond Dantes. he has been gone for 14(?) years and most people think him to have died in prison, It's only very natural that he would want to discover what has happened to his old friends, in the case of the priest visiting Caderousse, or to his persecutors in the case of the Englishman, which follows the theme of revenge or getting even.

Both of these characters are Dantes in disguise. I think this because, nobody could have known that much about him unless it was him, or the person followed him for his whole life.He does this because he needs to find out what happened in the last 14 years while he was in prison. he also does this so that he can reward those who helped him,and take revenge against those who hindered him.
