ReplyDeleteFirst of all im the first one to come here oh yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
secondly i thought the priest was really Dantes in disguise because he haddisguises at his disposal and the priest knew so much, are you saying he is not? The purpose would to give the illusion that Dantes is dead and can not have his revenge while also finding info on his "friends" the englishman was probably employed by dantes to first of all check the hand writing in the jailers and that thompson and france firm is fake and just used to get info on Morrel and he helped him by giving time to postpone the payments
First, I think the priest and the Englishman are both Dantes. The priest wants people to think that Dantes is dead, so that people won't know that Dantes is going to get revenge. The priest's task was to inform Caderousse that Dantes is dead, find out what happened to Mercedes, his father, his "friends", and to know to which friends to deliever the money from Dantes' diamond. I noticed that the priest made assumtions to Caserousse's story, like he was already knew what happened and was there, and he was very intrigued in the story. That lead me to belive that he is Dantes. The Englishman's task, I believe, was to get the letter that Danglars wrote. I think the whole thing about him being the head clerk of the firm Thomson and French is made up so he has a good disguise. He probaly wanted to get information about Morrel also, and he knew that Morrel tried to help him, so he is returning the help by extending his payment due date for three months. The Englishman was willing to pay two hundred thousand francs to get that letter, and that is what lead me to believe that he is Dantes.
ReplyDeleteThe clerk and the priest are definitely Dantes! Who else could it be? Dantes knows that no one would be able to recognize him, so it would be very easy to disguise himself. Both characters were very interested in all of the details concerning Dantes. The priest also had a diamond, and Edmond just discovered his treasure. The only priest that would known so many details about Dantes is Faria. The clerk tells Monsieur de Boville that he is the son of Faria, but the reader knows that the he does not have any birth sons because he commited himself to a life of celibacy. Faria sort of adopts Edmond as his son while they are imprisoned together. We also know that the priest's story is not plausible because he tells Caderousse that he was, "called to his deathbed to give him the last religion. And there, on his deathbed, he swore to me by Jesus Christ that he did not know the cause of his imprisonment." The reader knows that Faria helped Dantes figure out the reason for his punishment and that Dantes is not dead. The priest lied, and they are not supposed to. The priest cannot possibly be a real priest. The clerk was also very generous to give Morrel a three-month extension on his debts. The clerk seemed to have full faith that Morrel is an honest man, and he also gave Julie peculiar instructions.
