Blog 5 - due Friday morning, Nov. 6th, at 8 a.m.
We've known from the start of the novel who the enemies of the Count were - who betrayed him, and why. Now I would like your input on these characters. Specifically, I would like you to tell me which of these characters most deserved the wrath of the Count and why. (Answers will vary, I suspect.)

I believe that there are three major enemies of the Count, but I think there is another person who just betrayed him, she is not an enemy. These characters are Caderousse, Fernand, Danglars, and Mercedes. Mercedes is the individual who only betrayed him. The Count and Mercedes were in deep, passionate love for one another, and she only waited 18 months for his return. When Caderousse was at the bar where Fernand and Danglars were making the letter, and thinking about their plan, he didn't do anything about it. Caderousse did not do anything wrong, he just didn't do anything to try to help Edmond. Danglars was jealous of Edmond because he was made captain of the Pharaon. Fernand was also jealous of Edmond. Fernand loved Mercedes, but Edmond was engaged to her, so Danglars and Fernand both wanted Edmond gone. I believe Caderousse most deserved the wrath of the Count. Caderousse knew what was going on with the letter, and what was going to happen to Edmond. Caderousse did not do one thing to save Edmond. If he would have told the plan to the people, he would have saved Edmond's entire life. Edmond suffered a great deal, and he almost went mad due to Caderousse. I think Caderousse deserves equal punishment for what he caused the Count to go through.

From the start of the novel, the CMC, known as Dantes at the time, had three main rivals: Danglars, Fernand, de Villrfort, and Caderousse. As the story devolops, nothing has changed because there is still an enmity between them. The book expresses that Caderousse didn't in fact hurt Dantes, but he let it pass. Although he didn't most deserve his consequence (death by being stabbed multiple times)his lacking the will to help Dantes traped him in the web of the Count Of Monte Cristo's need for vengance.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the other three men were the three major benefactors that contributed to the many years of the Count's misery the biggest one probably being Danglars. When Dantes was still a shipmate on the Pharaon, it was stated early on that Danglars was already seeking vengance on him. Over time his hatred and jealousy piled up and he got what he wanted. But, now he is slowly paying the price. He has already lost 700 thousand francs and we have yet to see what other punishments he has to recieve.
Danglars especiaslly deserves this because he has held the longest grudge against Dantes, and he took out his anger and put it into action. I imagine there will be a bolldy and gory end to Danglars.
Nikhil B.
The CMC was thrown into prison unjustudly because of the actions of four people, Danglars, Fernand, Caderrouse, and Villefort causing CMC to take revenge on them. If one of these four people had not done what they had done, Dantes wouldn't have been thrown in jail. Danglars was part of the Pharaeon crew, and after hearing that Dantes, or CMC, would be made captain from Captain Leclere's death, Danglars becomes jealous, seeking vengeance on Dantes. Fernand, the second of CMC's rivals, is jealous of him as well. This, however, is because Dantes is engaged with the person he loves, Mercedes. Caderousse, another rival, is simply a troublemaker. By stirring up Danglars's and Fernand's anger, he causes them to take vengeance on Dantes. Also, Caderousse had the power to stop what was happening, but instead "let things take their course," which became his downfall later on. The fourth rival is the most important one that contributed to Dantes's imprisonment, for he could have gotten Dantes out of prison negating what the other three rivals did. That man is Gerard de Villefort. Although he knew that Dantes was telling the truth about not knowing anything about his reason for delivering the letter, his selfishness caused him to turn Dantes in despite Dantes's innonence. Villefort made Dantes believe he was doing him a favor but was really turning Dantes in for his on personal gain. Had he bailed Dantes out of prison because of his innonence instead of seeking a personal and selfish gain, it wouldn't have mattered if the letter had been sent or not. Therefore, Villefort had the biggest impact on Dantes's imprisonment, so I believe CMC should hold the biggest grudge against Villefort.

There are four main individuals that Monte Cristo should avenge. Fernand and Danglars deserve the wrath of the Count while Mercedes and Caderousse were not the main offenders, but they were still associated with the cause of Edmond's grief.
ReplyDeleteDanglars, I believe, is the most deservant of revenge because of the fact that he wrote the letter. Danglars envied Dantes because he was to become captain of the Pharaon but also because of his tremendous fortune. Because of his jealousy, Danglars caused Dantes to suffer, but Dantes had done nothing to Danglars that he knew of. Therefore, it was wrong of Danglars to cause despair in a life that did not deserve it.
Fernand is another main offender, but I believe he doesn't deserve as much hatred from the Count because he actually did have a purpose for his wrongdoings. Although he was guilty of sending the letter, he does not deserve as much punishment, but he still ought to have some reprimand.
The last two, Mercedes and Caderousse, deserve the least wrath from the Count in my opinion. Mercedes did not remain faithful although she should have. She only waited 18 months, but waiting for Dantes was not something she was obliged to do. Caderousse just sat there and watched the writing and mailing of the letter. He didn't do anything to save Edmond, but the reader has to remember that he was under the influence during this period of time.
- Roma P.
All the way back in the start of the book Edmond had enemies. They were Danglars, Fernand, and Caderousse. Danglars and Fernand are the ones who wrote and mailed the letter. Caderousse just sat back and let things take their course. For this reason I believe that the count was right in letting Benedetto stab him. Villefort was a enemy as soon as Abbe Faria explained the situation to Dantes. Those four men all deserve the full wrath of the Count. They all played a part in the suffering of Edmond. I believe that Mercedes also played a role in his suffering. Edmond wished that she would wait for him but she didn't. She therefore caused his heart even more pain. Though she did not cause him to be put in prison, she deserves punishment. I believe that the count should deal out harsh punishment to all these men. Mercedes does not need as harsh punishment but it should still hurt bad.

PS- I remembered my name this time!!!!
There are four main characters that have somehow or another caused Edmund Dantes to be angry and seek revenge. These are, Danglars, Caderousse, Fernand, and Mercedes. These people had some reason to seek revenge on Edmund Dantes, whether it be that they were in love with the same woman, or that he was about to be made captain of a ship called the Pharaon. Danglars was seeking revenge because Dantes was made captain of the Pharaon after the death of Captain Leclaire. Danglars thought that he deserved this title, and sense then has been jealous of Edmund (CMC). Fernand is seeking revenge on Edmund Dantes because he loved Mercedes, the same woman who during that time, was having a relationship with Edmund. Mercedes is not jealous of the CMC, but it is the other way around. When the CMC was put in jail, Mercedes was faithful for only 18 months, but after that, she thought that he had died went on to marry Fernand.
ReplyDeleteI think that the person that deserved the most revenge was Caderousse. Although he was not directly involved in the arrest, he did not to anything to try and stop it. Caderousse was there during the writing and mailing of the letter that would put Edmund Dantes in jail, and just watched. If Caderousse had mentioned the letter to the police, then Edmund would have been spared prison, and he would have been able to go on with his life and become the captain of the Pharaon.
-Morgan C.
There are five major enemies of the count. These five people are Mercedes, Ferdnand, Danlgars, Villefort, and Caderousse,
ReplyDeleteAlthough all these individuals were involved in causing Dantes grief and sorrow, I think only three should receive the full wrath of the Counts revenge. These three characters are Ferdnand, Villefort, and Danglars. Mercedes did not actually take part in sending Dantes to jail. Edmond and Mercedes were madly in love before Dantes was sent off to jail. Dantes becomes mad at Mercedes because when he gets sent off to jail, she only waits 18 months before she finds her new lover Ferdnand. This makes the count very angry. Caderousse also I think should not get as much punishment as the others. Although he was involved in writing the letter that sent Dante to jail, he was under the influence at the time, and he did not participate in writing the letter. He was just a bystander in the scene.
I believe Villefort, Danglars, and Ferdnand should get the biggest punishment from the Count. Danglars was the person who actually wrote the letter that claimed that Dantes was a "traitor" because he was asked to go on a secret mission for his old captain. Ferdnand should also recieve a great amount of punishment from the Count. Ferdnand was very jeleous of Dantes because of his relationship with Mercedes. Because of his envy, he plots against Dantes and he delivers the letter to the police that describes how Dantes betrayed the king. I also think Villefort should get a lot of punishment because Villefort knew that Dantes was innocent, but to protect his own name, he burned the letter and sent Dantes to jail. This way, Dantes would never ever be able to speak of how his father was the one who really was the traitor.
Taking all these things into consideration, I believe that the Count should hold the biggest grudge against Villefort, Danglars, and Ferdnand.
McKinley W.
I believe that the Count has enemies whom he has deeply disliked for years, but I also believe that he continues to make new enemies (and other people who aren't considered his enemies but aren't on his side) as he carries out all of his intriguing plots. I believe that his main enemies are Danglars and Fernand because they were a part of a plan to attempt to bring Dantes down. Danglars was a cruel, jealous man who couldn't stand to watch Dantes become important in life, and this caused him to get rid of Dantes. Fernand was a fool in love who wanted to marry the woman who loved Dantes, so this motivated him to get Dantes out of the picture for his love to set its course. Now, I'm sure that you may be wondering what I think of Caderousse. At first, I believed that Caderousse was an innocent bystander who was pulled into this giant mess. But the events that took place later in the book completely change my mind. Even though Caderousse attempted to rob the Count (Dantes) I would no longer consider him innocent, but I wouldn't consider him as one of Dantes' enemies.
ReplyDeleteAll in all, I believe that Danglars deserves the full wrath of the Count with a little beating saved for Fernand. I believe that Danglars was the complete mastermind of Dantes' imprisonment, and Fernand was just extra help to carry out the plan. If anyone is to be punished, it should definitely be Danglars.
Grace W.
I think that Danglars should recieve the most punishment for his actions beacuse he is the person who wrote the fake letter knowing that it would ruin Edmond's life. Fernand just sent the letter, Caderousse was just a bystander, and deVillefort was just trying to protect himself. While all of those things were horrible, I think that what Danglars did was the worst because he wanted to destroy Edmond.
ReplyDelete- Suriya S.
Fernand, Danglars, Villefort, Caderousse, and Mercedes wronged him. All but Mercedes deserve punishment. I suspect she could only wait for him for eighteen months, and then she was forced to marry Fernand. Maybe she gave up on the hope that Dantes was alive. She had to pretend like she loved Fernand. Danglars actuallly framed Dantes. He was jealous that he was not going to become captain of the Pharaon. His letter imprisoned Edmond for fourteen years! That's longer than I have been alive! Fernand witnessed the entire thing AND sent the letter. He helped Danglars with the whole thing. He and Danglars should be punished the most severely. They started the whole plot against Dantes that COMPLETELY changed his life. Caderousse just let things take their course...and the count got the perfect revenge on him. The count really knows what he is doing. Morcerf totally deserved to be exploited and humiliated in front of all of his colleagues. It was exposed that he had been a coward and betrayed his dead former commander. Villefort was trying to maintain his reputation. He sent the poor young guy (count) to jail! He tried to bury a baby! What a horrible person. These characters all make me mad. They are so selfish!
ReplyDelete-MAUREEN M.
I believe that the Count of Monte Cristo has three main enemies. These rivals are de Villefort, Fernand, and Danglars. First, Monsieur de Villefort is the count's enemy because he was the public prosecutor who condemned the count to 14 long years in prison. Despite Dantes's obvious innocence, Villefort had him thrown into prison. He never even gave Dantes a chance to prove himself innocent because he did not want Dantes to share the secret about his father helping Napoleon. Therefore, Villefort thought about himself before justice for Dantes. This makes him one of Dantes's enemies.
ReplyDeleteNext, I think that Fernand is one of the main enemies of the count. Due to his love for Mercedes, Fernand mailed the letter which caused Dantes to be imprisoned, so he was an accomplice in the plot against Dantes. I am very glad that the count humiliated Fernand (Morcerf) in front of society.
Finally, the last enemy and the main antagonist of the story is Danglars. He was the instigator of the plot against Dantes. Because he was jealous of Dantes's well-deserved promotion to captain, Danglars decided to ruin the man's future! He came up with and wrote the letter convicting Dantes. He is the real enemy! I also hate Danglars because he is a coward who thinks of only his wealth and himself. I cannot wait until the Count of Monte Cristo disposes of his greatest enemy!
~Andrew C.
In my opinion, The Count has three major enemies, and one that he is unhappy with. The three enemies are Villefort, Danglars, and Fernand. Cadderouse was the one that he is unhappy with. I am not including Cadderouse in the enemies list, because he didn't do anything to harm the Count except not do anything to stop those who were. I think that the one that deserves the worst punishment is Danglars. Danglars is the one that organized the letter, and also persuaded Fernand to join him in the plan to imprison the Count. Fernand mailed the letter to Villefort, which lead to his imprisonment, so that makes him an enemy. Villefort is the one who sent the Count to jail, even though he said that he wouldn't, so he can be considered as an enemy also. As you can see, Danglars is the sole reason that the other two even got involved, therefore, causing him to get the worst punishment in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteJACK M.
The four characters that the Count wants revenge on are Danglars, Fernand, Caderousse, and de Villefort. I believe that all of these characters deserve a harsh punishment related to the way that they hurt Dantes. I think that standing by to let Cadersousse die was a punishment that he deserved because Caderousse just stood by during the process of arresting Dantes.
ReplyDeleteI think that all of the remaining men should have a worse punishment because they were more directly involved with the arrest. Even so, I believe that Danglars should recieve the worst punishment. Even though Fernand stole the Count's fiance and de Villefort put the Count in jail and burned evidence, Danglars set the wheels in motion for these acts. It was his plot, and without him, the other men would not have joined to take down Dantes.
Katelyn J.
While in the Chateau d'If, Danglars swore revenge on four people- Ferdnand, Danglars, Caderousse, and de Villefort. All of the characters either betrayed him or did nothing to help him when it was easily in their power.
ReplyDeleteI believe Ferdnand deserved the harshest punishment because, not only did he send the letter to de Villefort to put Dantes in jail, but he married his fiance and had a son with her. Villefort lied to Dantes because he didn't want people to know that his father was Nortier, so he sent him to jail even though he had promised not to. Danglars is next in line. He betrayed Edmond in that he actually wrote the letter, but beyond that he didn't do very much. The one who should have been less punished, in my opinion, is Caderousse. He didn't directly do anything to betray Dantes, but he had the power and ability to stop him from going to jail, and yet he didn't. Ironically, he was the first one to die.

In my opinion the Count of Monte Cristo has three main enemies. These are Fernand also known as the Count of Morcef, Danglars, and Villefort. I consider these people to be the main enemies and antagonists of the story because they were the ones who together condemned Dantes to 14 years in prison and seized his happiness from him. Danglars wrote the letter that made it seem as if Dantes had attempted to commit treason, Fernand mailed the letter, and Villefot sent Dantes to imprisonment without a fair trial. These men committed this horrid act out of either jealousy or ambition. Fernand wanted to marry Mercedes, who was engaged to Dantes, and was jealous of the love they shared. Danglars was also jealous of Dantes because he was going to be promoted to captain instead of Danglars. Villefort locked Dantes up for 14 long years due to his great ambition. Dantes was carrying a letter from Napoleon to Villefort's father. If it was discovered that Villefort's father was an active bonapartist, then Villefort feared his carer would be ruined. Villefort locked Dantes up in prison so this fact would not become known. I believe Danglars deserves the greatest wrath of Dantes because he was the mastermind behind the plot and it was he who came up with the plan to wreck Dantes's future. Teddy G.
ReplyDeleteIn the beginning of CMC, the book established the four main enemies of Dantes: Fernand, Villefort, Caderousse, and Danglars. All of these characters had no right to do what they did to Dantes. Caderousse only did it because he liked to stir things up. The only reason Villefort did it was out of his own selfishness because he didn't want people to find out that his dad was involved with the Bonopartists. Danglars did it because he was jealous of Dantes. Lastly, Fernand did it because he loved Mercedes and wanted her to marry himself and not Dantes. These four men had no right to do what they did, but the one I think who deserves the most punishment is Fernand. Not only did he send the letter to Villefort, but he ended up marrying Mercedes. He also had a child with her. Even though Fernand didn't organize Dantes' imprisonment, what he did after Dantes was gone was far worse than anything the other men did.
ReplyDeletewoops i forgot to put Anna Louise B. on the one above
ReplyDeleteThe people who have betrayed Edmond Dantes, also known as the Count of Monte Cristo, are de Villeford, Danglars, Fernand, Caderrouse, and Mercedes. De Villeford had burned the letter and sent Dantes to jail. Danglars wrote the letter that sent him to jail. Fernand sent the letter and stole Mercedes away from Dantes. Caderrouse simply stood by and did nothing. Although Fernand both sent him to jail and took his woman, Caderrouse did nothing. Fernand had reason to be upset, which is more noble than a man who had nothing to be upset about. Caderrouse knew what was going on, was friends with Dantes, and yet let him be sent away. Although his punishment was not the most severe because his actions against Dantes were not as severe, it was the first one, the one dominoe. If he had said something, note of the other events would have occured.
ReplyDelete~Madison Calichia
I believe the count has only three men to blame, but he has one man to be upset with. The three to blame are de Villefort, Fernand, and Danglars. The fourth man is Caderousse. The count already took care of Caderousse. What he did wrong was that he didn't stop the other men. If he has stopped them, he could have saved dantes. That is why the count didn't help Caderousse when he was dying. He "let things take their course" just like Caderousse did. When Caderousse died, the count said "one" as if he had a check list of people to kill. I thought this was really cool :-) The other three men, however, definitly deserve the full wrath of the count!!!! The last few pages we read tonight have been kind of confusing, but I think they have something to do with revenge and Fernand. Fernand mailed the letter that got dantes arrested and then stole his girl! Danglars was the worst because he WROTE the letter. I'm excited to see what the count is going to do to him. de Villefort was the one who sent dantes to jail. This book has been getting really interesting in the last 50 pages or so, but I want to see some real revenge!!!
ReplyDeleteAlina V.
The Count of Monte Cristo wants revenge on four people and is disappointed with another. He wants revenge on Danglars, Fernand, Caderousse, and Villefort. Danglars wrote the letter that led to Dantes being put in jail, and Fernand mailed it. Caderousse just stood around and watched Danglars and Fernand but made no move to stop them. Villefort put Dantes in jail and made sure he stayed there, but it was because he was concerned about his reputation, not because of something Dantes intentionally did. Mercedes is the person that the Count is disappointed with. He doesn't really want to get back at her, but he is upset that she married Fernand after only eighteen months. I believe Danglars is the one who deserves the worst punishment from the Count. Danglars was the cause of everything, and it's his fault. If he didn't try to make Dantes' life miserable, none of this would have happened.
ReplyDeleteAll of the people the Count wants to get back at are incredibly self-centered. Danglars wrote the letter because he was jealous and thought he was better, and Fernand mailed it because he wanted Mercedes all to himself. Villefort stuck him in jail because he didn't want his reputation to be hurt, and all Caderousse thinks about is money! It's quite disgusting how all these people only care about themself, and I can't wait for the Count to get back at all of them!
Emily C.
From the beginning of the novel, the main enemies of the Count have been Danglars, Fernand, Caderousse, and de Villefort. All of them definitely deserve the wrath of the Count, but I think that Danglars deserved it most because he is the person out of all of them who set the wheels in motion for Dantes' arrest. He got Caderousse and Fernand in on his plan and then de Villefort got tied in once Dantes had been arrested. I also think Caderousse deserves the wrath of the Count because although he didn't do much, he sat by and watched as Fernand and Danglars plotted against Dantes. But unlike Fernand, de Villefort, and Danglars, he had absolutely no reason to be upset with Dantes and want him to suffer. Danglars was jealous of Dantes because he was going to be made captain of the Pharaon. Fernand was also jealous of Dantes but it was because he was going to marry the woman he too loved, and de Villefort wanted to protect his reputation. All of these men had a valid reason to want Dantes out of the way, but Caderousse did not which just makes him cruel(But I'm not saying that Danglars, Fernand, and de Villefort aren't cruel and selfish too because they most definitely are). Even though they had reasons want Dantes out of their lives does not mean they should have done what they did. For this, they should all be punished, but I think that Danglars deserves the wrath of the Count most. Without him, none of this would have ever happened.
ReplyDeleteKatherine W.
From the very start of the book, only 3 enemies become clear, the 3 obviously being Fernand, Danglars and the Villefort. Later, you see Mercedes symbolically betraying him by only waiting 18 months after his disappearance before marrying his enemy. Caderousse was a character I originally thought to be average or good, but the vengeful character that is the Count of Monte Cristo trades an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Caderousse changed when I as the reader thought he was one of Edmond's real friends. When Caderousse shows his true colors as someone who observes and doesn't act when he has the chance to make a difference, Monty Cristo, or Abbe Busoni at the time does the same back to him by allowing his death to occur just as caderousse had done to the true Edmon Dantes.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, though, the Count's ultimate enemy was probably Fernand. Even if he hadn't taken the primary initiative in causing Edmond's imprisonment, he ended the possibility for a life with Edmond and Mercedes together.
Of course, if we are discussing who deserves his wrath rather than who, for Edmond's reasons, he should punish it may not be Fernand. The Count likes to believe he is acting as the hand of God, but clearly making the Morcerf family his most predominant enemy. The Count had 3 targets in the family, being Fernand, Mercedes (in a way), and Albert.
-Holden B
In my opinion the only two people that deserve punishment are Fernand and Danglars. I dont even think that Fernand did that much against Edmond. I ccan see why the Count would feel hatred to him but all he did was send the letter and then marry Mercedes which he had no reason not to. Im not taking Fernand's side on this because I know he's a jerk but I thik the main culprit was Danglars. I could also understand how the count could feel angry towards Mercedes because she almost iimiadetely married Fernand. Although she did this, I dont think she diserves to be punished one because she thought Edmond was pretty much out of her life forever and she couldnt just sit around her whole life crying for edmond. Also what Danglars and Fernand did is so much greater than what Mercedes did that the Count probabaly doesn't care that much. Overall I think that all of the Count's evil plans should be centered on danglars.
ReplyDeleteBrock D.
At the beginning of the story Edmond Dantes had a good life. But as the story continues he ends up making a turn for the worst, and his life goes straight down hill. Dantes had friends and enemies, but without his enemies he would have never ended up in jail. The three main characters in his downfall are: Fernand, de Villefort, and Danglars. Athough Caderousse was not his enemy he still stood on the side line and watched the counts life get thrown in the trash. The count has already disposed of Caderousse in a most fair way because he just stood and let what takes place take place. Although their is three characters to his down fall I feel that danglars is the largest contributer. Fernand only wanted the love of Mercedes. De Villefort was just scared that his fathers political stand point would bring about the truth of him. Danglars acted upon pure jealousy. He looked at Dantes and who he was. The promotion, the girl, and the good life drove Danglars to come up with the terrible plot. Danglars really got everyone fired up to take down Dantes. He told Fernand he plot to mail the letter. He made sure it was Villefort who received it and realized his life was at jeapordy. He threw Dantes into prison and burned the letter. None of this would have happened had Danglars not riled everyone up. Danglars also stopped the marriage between Mercedes and Dantes.
ReplyDeleteTom.P
The three people that betrayed the Count were Danglars, Fernand, and Villefort. All three played an important part in what happened to the Count. They all three deserve the revenge the Count has planned for them. However, in my opinion, the most deserving of the Count's vengeance is Danglars. Danglars destroyed the Count's whole life just because of his jealousy and personal dislike of the Count. Like Danglars, Fernands only motivation was personal jealously due to his love for Mercedes. Unlike Danglars and Fernand, Villefort's motivation was not jealously, but instead the desire to protect his good name and potential marriage to someone who could advance his career and wealth. All three played an important role in destroying an innocent man's life.
ReplyDeleteMorgan P.
In my opinion, the count has these enimies, Fernand, Danglars, and de Villefort. The count obviously has his reasons, but these men are obviously deserving of his wrath. Fernand A.K.A. de Morcef how ever you spell his name clearly deserves the count's wrath. For instance Fernand helped create the letter and mailed it himself to Villefort to put Dantes into prizon. Fernand also sold haydee and her mother into slavery and broke the promise he had with Ali Pasha. He also marries Mercedes Dantes former mistress and has a child with her named Albert. Danglars, also deserving of the count's wrath, helped write the letter putting Dantes into przon as well as forging the signature on the letter. Danglars also is jelous of Dantes and makes sure he is not captian of the Pharaon(explaining why he wrote the letter). Villefort being a pompous, seflcenterd jerk decides to throw Dantes in prizon for no good reason. Although Villefort hold a high government position on France he should not use his powers all will-nilly. In such a way his reputation could be ruined and he could loose his post. In my opinion Fernand is the count's ultimate enemy. He has done so many wrong things that the count should take the most revenge on him as possible. Already the count has publicly humiliated his family as one form of revenge, but I still think there is more to come.
ReplyDeleteGrace M.
I believe that the Count of Monte Cristo has three real enemies. These men are Fernand, Danglars, and de Villefort. The reason I don't think Caderousse is one of his enemies is that he never did anything to the Count, he just stood by and watched things happen. The reason Fernand is an enemy is because he was the one who was jealous of Mercedes. He helped put the count in jail by mailing the letter that imprisoned him. I think that he deserved to be humiliated in front of everyone. Another one of the count's enemies is Villefort. Villefort is an enemy because he was the one who actually put the count in jail. He put the count in jail because he didn't want him to tell anyone that his father, Nortier, was helping out Napoleon. The count's third and final enemy is Danglars. Danglars was one of the Count's friends on the Phareon, but when the count was promoted and he wasn't, he became very jealous. He came up with the idea to put the count behind bars, and he was the one who wrote the actual letter. Out of all of the Count's enemies, I think that Danglars is the most deserving of punishment. Though Villefort and Danglars have not been punished yet, I think that Danglars will get it the worst. I believes this because he was the mastermind who created the whole plan, and therefor he is the count's greatest enemy.
ReplyDelete-Michael P.
I don't think there is any question on who the top four culprits are: Caderousse, Fernand, Villefort, and Danglars. However, who is the worst out of these four? Let's begin with Caderousse. Personally, I think there is no such thing as an innocent bystander, so Caderousse, though he didn't physically do anything, is definitely a guilty party. The Count proved this to him as he stood back while Caderousse was murdered. Now, what about Villefort? He is obviously guilty, but what all did he do? First, he lied to an innocent man on the level of severity of punishment he would recieve. Second, the only reason the man was sentenced was so that Villefort's reputation would not be tarnished byhis father's actions. Third, he sent that innocent young to prison. This may seem like a lot, but it all summarizes into: he doomed one man (Dantes) for the sake of his own purposes and ambitions. He reminds me almost of Pontius Pilot (from the Bible): he may have originally had the right intentions at heart, but his selfishness and inabillity to not care about others opinions caused him to make the wrong decision. In my oinion, even the unjust judge did less wrong than Danglars and Fernand. Danglars was the mastermind behind the whole operation. He came up with the idea, wrote the letter, and diguised his handwriting. Without Danglars, none of this would have occurred. His envy was his only prompt for his actions. He had no reason or right. I think the most guilty was Fernand. He may not be the wisest or the most important factor of the tragedy, but he did what he did because he wanted Mercedes and hated Dantes because that was the man Mercedes truly loved. When he mailed that letter, he believed that with his hopes and dreams became possible, and they did. As if dooming an innocent man weren't enough, he also married the woman Dantes was betrothed to. For me, that was what made him the worst. This is what makes Fernand the Count's greatest enemy.

I am very surprised that the answer wasn't unanimus! I think there is one obviouse person that deserves the most punishement, but before that I will introduce the ones that do and do not deseve punishment. Danglars, Villefort, and Fernand all deserve the CMC's rath. Mercedes doesn't deserve it at all; she was unfaithful to him after 18 months. 18 MONTHS she thought he was dead. I am defending her because even though it took 18 months, Dante was still in jail during that time and more, so how could you blame her? Caderousse didn't deserve punishment for being a bystandered under the influence. He definitly should have been let stabbed though after attempting to stab CMC (poor desision). Caderousse was dumb and I am glad he is out of the picture.
ReplyDeleteFernand mailed the letter which sent him to jail and took his girlfriend. Villfort was being selfish about his life and didn't let Dantes out of jail like he promised. But, without Danglars, this book would't have happend. HE is the one who envied his promotion 1st. HE is the one who planned to get him out of the picture for his own selfish reason to be the captin of the Pharon. HE is the one who wrote the letter that send him to jail, and HE is the one that should have no mercy blessed upon him by the CMC's wrath. Danglars is going to die last, and probably the most violently (hopfully).

I feel like so many characters treated the count unjustly. The main ones, however, are Caderousse, Danglars, Fernand, and Villefort. They did things which shouldn't have been done to him.
ReplyDeleteCaderousse didn't play such a large role in pulling the count into his despair. He just sat back and watched it happen. Danglars, Fernand and Villefort and the ones that really dug a hole and threw him in it. Danglars personally wrote the letter that prosecuted him. The count didn't do anything to make Danglars upset except succeed. Danglars wrote that letter in his own decision. Fernand mailed it, which wasn't such a large play in the scheme of things, but he also took the count's beloved. Fernand took the one good thing left in the counts life at the time and stole it. Villefort really played the upper hand in the counts downfall. Villefort acted as if he was doing something good, and he burnt the letter. This actually killed the evidence of him relating himself to his father. Then, he had the count thrown in jail for the sake of having him and his father's relation undiscovered.
All of them will feel the counts wrath in one way or another for sure. I think that Villefort, Fernand, and Danglars should all be punished more then anyone for what they did.

In my opinion, CMC has three enemies: Danglars, Fernand, and Caderousse. Each one of them have their mistakes, and here they are:
ReplyDeleteDanglars: Danglars is the one who actually wrote out the letter by hand, knowing what it would do and that it would destroy Dantes. He only did this because he was blinded by jealousy, and maybe if he had seen the other side of things, he would have thought before sending in the letter. But, from his standpoint, I would be very jealous, too, if I were in his place, and it would be very hard to overcome his jealousy and anger.
Fernand: Fernand is the one who sent the letter, even though he knew what he was sending. He felt as if it were the best thing to do to get rid of Edmond because he was in love with Mercedes. Even though I strongly disagree with his decision to do the evil deed, I can see why he did it. He wanted Mercedes, and he would do anything to have her love him back. But it wasn't fair to Mercedes because she was rightfully in love with Edmond, and Fernand was just trying to mess with nature's course.
Caderousse: Caderousse was the one who liked to kind of stir things up a little bit. He was never the one who did the bad thing or had the unfortunate event take place on him. He let the lava flow naturally while he occasionally poked it with a stick, so to speak. So, that's what he did with the letter. He just sort of sat there and let it happen, though he could have stopped it at any time. He could've jumped up and said "ENOUGH!!!!".... but he didn't. He let things unravel, seeing what happened on the way. And, in the end, things took a turn for the worse and CMC was sent to jail.
Out of the three main people who had something to do with the letter, I believe that Danglars is the one to punish. One reason is that he is the one who actually wrote the letter and felt the need to create such a nasty document. Also, since he was Dantes's shipmate, they may know things about each other that hasn't been stated in the book. Maybe there is some former head-butting before when the book starts. For all we know, they could have been best buddies, and something terrible happened between them that could have caused them to break apart from each other. The world may never know....

The Count of Monte Cristo has many enemies. The three major ones are Danglars, Fernand and de Villefort. Danglars was the one who wrote the letter that made it look like the Count was involved in a rebellion to bring Napoleon back to power. Fernand was the one who mailed the letter Danglars wrote. Fernand also married Mercedes, the one who Dantes loves. De Villefort was the prosecutor who promised Dantes that it was a misunderstanding and he would be fine. But de Villefort actually got Dantes sent to prison for 14 years. Of those three enemies. I think that Danglars deserves the most punishment because he was the one who started it all.

I think his worstenemy was Fernand. Fernand sent a letter to get the Count arrested just so he could marry the count's fiancee, Mercedes. It was an extremely cruel thing to do. He could probably find another woman but he got Dantes thrown into jail from a lie. However, he wasn't the only one. Villefort could have realized that Dantes was innocent, but he did nothing. Last, Danglars, wrote the letter to get Dantes arrested. Danglars just wanted to take Dantes job of captain, and instead of earning it himself, he got Dantes arrested.
ReplyDeleteI think that all of these people were very cruel to Dantes, and I think now the Count should get revenge on all of them.

There are a lot of characters that deserves the wrath of CMC. There is Danglars, Fernand, Caderousse, and de Villefort. I believe that Danglars is the one that deserves the most punishment for his actions. He was the one who wrote the letter and made the plan. He pulled Fernand into the plan, and Fernand was the one who sent the letter. Caderousse could have out a stop to the plan or just left it but he was a bystander and didn't stand up for his friend and neighbor(CMC). Fernand stole CMC's wfie to be. de Villefort was the one to punish Dantes from the fake letter. de Villefort wouldn't listen to CMC at all. Danglars and Fernand were both jealous of CMC and that is why they carried out their horrific plan. Fernand and de Villefort both deserve the second harshest punishment. They all deserve to die though which is what CMC will make them do. Be terrified of his wrath. Mwah ha ha ha ha!
ReplyDeleteJ.T.-sorry for being late i forgot
I think that the people that deserve the wrath of CMC are, Danglars, Fernand, de Villefort, and Caderousse. I think that CMC hould get back at Danglars is because he wrot the letter saying that Dantes should go to jail. He knew that w a lie ut he hated him so much that he didn't care at all. I think that Fernand shold b punished becausse one, he helped Danglars get rid of him by mailing the letter, two, he didn't really like Dantes and wasn't nice to him , and three, he stole Dantes' girl, now thats just flatout mean. de Villefort should definatley be punished because he sent Dantes to jail just to save his own behind. Caderousse should be punished because he also helped Danlars and Fernand Get rid of Dantes. They all deserve what is coming and should all die.

A common trait that every human being is born with is jealousy. For a man with everything going the right way, man people are jelous of him. Edmond Dantes was a man with all things in his favor, and a few were very jealous. Fernand was envious because of his failed love with Mercedes. Danglars was jealous because of Edmond's promotion. Caderousse, well Caderousse just likes to cause trouble.
ReplyDeleteOf all these sinful people, I think that Fernand deserves the most revenge. The love in Edmond's old relationship carries over to the Count's hatred. To steal a man's woman is one of the most cruel things to do, and for that, the wrath of God knows no bounds.

I believe that Edmond Dantes has three main enemies that deserve punishment for their actions, Villefort, Danglars, and Fernand. I do not think Caderouse was as much an enemy because he was completely drunk when Danglars wrote the letter to imprison Dantes and he did not fully understand what was going on at the time. Villefort attempted to lock Edmond away for the rest of his life because he knew the name of his father, who was a bonapartist. Villefort does this because he is afraid that if anyone found out about this that he would be ruined. Fernand deserves punishment because he helped plan how he and Danglars could get rid of Edmond and helped to deliver the letter. In my opinion, Danglars deserves the most punishment. Envious of Edmond's good fortune at being promoted to captain instead of himself, Danglars writes the letter intended to remove Edmond from his life. If it were not for Danglars than Edmond would not have been put through 14 long years of suffering.
